Program Description

New digital technologies are transforming the workplace as companies improve their operational efficiencies and grow using new hybrid business models. This Master's degree develops your career with this in mind, giving you the knowledge and skills to develop and work with the next generation of smart technologies.

This course is designed for science and technology graduates as well as experienced engineers who wish to update their skills in the emerging areas of smart factories and smart cities, utilising Industry 4.0 technologies.

Designed to meet the evolving demands of the industry, the course is backed by Festo, National Instruments and Siemens and is supported by the Sector Skills Council SEMTA. As a result, you will learn using the latest technologies from these organisations and work on real industry challenges.

It recognises that graduates will have different levels of skills and a variety of interests related to this subject, so has been specifically designed to take a portfolio approach. This allows you to work on a wide range of projects to build your knowledge and experience specific to your own ambitions.

Curriculum

Mechatronics Systems (Hardware and Software Portfolio)

The main aim of this module is to introduce students to core technologies involved both in hardware and software technologies. These include robotics and automation equipment provided from Festo used in automotive, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage; control systems (PLCs & HMIs) provided by Siemens and software systems such as LabVIEW provided by National Instruments as well as others.

Mechatronics Systems (Systems Integration Portfolio)

This module will introduce systems necessary to integrate the hardware and software systems along with sensors (or sensor networks) to form Smart Factories, making use of various network protocols (wired and mobile) along with the relevant safety and security systems.

Individual Project

This module consolidates the knowledge and advanced skills gained in the preceding part of the programme and provides you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate mastery in undertaking projects on your own.

On successful completion of the programme you will be able to progress into a career in a wide range of automation industries in roles such as:

  • Automation engineers
  • Security engineers for cyber-physical applications
  • Specialist practitioner in Internet of Things industry
