Program Description

Our Civil Engineering MEng degree is a highly innovative course that has been developed to equip you with a broad range of knowledge and management skills to meet the real world needs of the civil engineering and construction industry.

You will study the traditional elements of civil engineering including design, structures, materials, fluid mechanics, geotechnics and maths. You’ll be introduced to a range of construction topics and then progress to specialist subjects such as structural analysis and computational mechanics. You will then move on to advanced topics including project management, and structural design and FEA.

Access is available to custom-designed technical facilities to work on your laboratory experiments. These include fluids and hydraulics laboratories, and structures, materials and geotechnics labs. The latest industry standard engineering software packages are available for you to use in dedicated computer clusters.

£3,000 fee reduction in final year

Course Content

Course delivery is a combination of theory and practical sessions. In your first two years, you will gain solid knowledge and understanding of mainstream civil engineering. You’ll also develop your reflective skills and professional development planning through the ‘Professional Skills’ module and your personal development log.

In later years, you move on to modern topics such as innovative construction materials as well as advanced subjects including water infrastructure engineering and risk and financial management. You will work on your individual research project in your third year and your group design project in your MEng final year.

Careers

Many of our civil engineering graduates begin their careers with contractors and consultants working on large infrastructure projects such as:

  • bridges
  • high-rise buildings
  • tunnels
  • flood and coastal defence schemes
  • transport
  • highways
  • water treatment
  • modern methods of construction

Some go on to jobs with multinational and local government agencies or major firms of consulting engineers. Others specialise in:

  • construction
  • sustainability
  • innovative materials
  • foundation engineering
  • tunnelling
  • geotechnical exploration
  • highway engineering

Opting for the year in industry during your civil engineering degree may lead to a job offer from your placement company.
