Program Description

Both advertising and marketing continue to play a big part in everyday life, and recent advancements in digital technology and social media allow for new and exciting ways to attract and engage customers at any time and in any place.

This course, which currently benefits from EFMD programme accreditation and is part of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Graduate Gateway programme, is aimed at students with an interest in advertising and marketing from the creative to the analytical – whether that is advertising and branding, consumer behaviour, digital and social media marketing, or new product development and market research. It provides an opportunity to gain a solid foundation in marketing and advertising, with a specific focus on marketing communications across different media and contexts.

When studying this course, you will have the opportunity to work in our DigiComm Lab, which has been designed for marketing students, and is equipped with industry standard marketing and advertising software, to allow you to explore how to put the theories you are being taught into practice.

The course aims to develop your awareness and understanding of contemporary marketing and advertising concepts and theories. The course is designed to equip you with the analyyical tools necessary to investigate a marketing and/or advertising problem and develop appropriate solutions.

One of the major attractions of the Advertising and Marketing course is the broad range of practical and transferrable skills you will have the opportunity to develop, including creative, analytical, interpersonal and communications skills. In several modules, the assessments require the undertaking of group and individual tasks that aims to simulate the analytical, planning and creative aspects of marketing in the workplace.

Overview

All of our Marketing courses share some common first year modules, and so initially, you will study subjects designed to develop your understanding of business in general, as well as introductory specialisms like market research and data analysis, which provide the opportunity to gain a solid foundation for your ongoing studies. You will then have the opportunity to develop your expertise in key areas that underpin advertising and marketing, such as advertising concepts, integrated marketing and marketing principles.

In your second year, you will have the opportunity to build and apply your knowledge and skill base, developed in year one, to real life situations and case studies. You will also study modules on key areas of marketing such as consumer behaviour, marketing insights, and the management of digital marketing and online presence.

The culmination of your studies will be the completion of an independent research project in a specialist area.

You will be supported by an academic supervisor with an interest in your topic area, with past topics ranging from digital marketing, advertising and branding research to ethical and cultural issues in marketing, which can include anything from stereotypical to subliminal advertising.

In your third year you have the option to apply for a placement, or study abroad year, which can be spent overseas (studying with one of our partner universities, or working) or on a placement in the UK.

Coventry Business School’s employability team can provide you with a wide range of support services in order to help you apply for a placement opportunity, including mock interviews and CV writing workshops.

If you wish to undertake the optional study abroad/placement year, you will take either the Placement Year module or the Study Abroad Year module which both typically run for a full academic year between years 2 and 3 of your course. You are able to progress onto the relevant module if you have successfully completed the first two years of the course (i.e. having accumulated 240 credits) and have a confirmed opportunity two weeks prior to the start of the academic year, however we encourage international students to confirm their placements earlier to ensure they are able to meet any applicable visa requirements.

Students opting for either the work placement or study abroad module will be registered on a non-credit bearing module and therefore no additional tuition fees apply. While the modules do not bear credits, they do require completion of a marked assessment reflecting on your placement/study abroad or work placement experience. Following successful completion of this assessment, the module selected will appear on your final academic transcript.

Students will thus graduate with 360 credits in total, assuming successful completion of their final year.

In your final year, you will also have the opportunity to take an optional module, which could focus on either the more creative elements of advertising, or how to build strategies for digital and social media.
