Program Description

The Master of Arts Program in Sociology at the University of South Alabama (USA) provides students with advanced training in sociological theory and social science research methods for enhanced understanding of several specialized subject areas of sociology, including crime and deviance, environmental sociology, family, gender, medical sociology, religion, social psychology, stratification and mobility, and work and labor markets.

In addition to working closely with sociology graduate faculty, students can collaborate with graduate faculty in anthropology and social work and can simultaneously pursue a graduate certificate in gerontology. Full-time graduate students can earn a master’s degree in sociology in four academic semesters. The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work also offers an accelerated bachelor's to master's degree in sociology. Students in the accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree program can earn a master’s degree in sociology within one academic year after completing their undergraduate degree.

Students in the Master of Arts Program in Sociology are involved in a variety of scholarly research projects and can gain valuable teaching-related experience. Students are also engaged in a number of community-based internships in and around Mobile with area partners such as the Veterans Health Administration, the University of South Alabama, the United States Probation Office, Feeding the Gulf Coast, and Via Health, Fitness, and Enrichment Center.

No matter the academic experience, the Master of Arts Program in Sociology provides students with both scholarly and practical skills for continued graduate study or workforce readiness.
