    Program Description

    The School of Marine Engineering is one of the principal academic units of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, serving as a leading centre of excellence for education, training, and research in marine engineering. Committed to academic excellence, technological innovation, and professional development, the School equips students with the knowledge, practical skills, and engineering competencies required to excel in the demanding and continuously evolving global maritime industry. The School was established on 1 November 1999 as part of the reform of Bulgaria's military education system and in accordance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act. Since its establishment, it has offered specialized programmes designed to educate highly qualified marine engineers through a balanced combination of theoretical instruction, laboratory work, simulator-based training, and practical experience. The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines, including Marine Engineering, Marine Electrical Engineering, Ship Repair Technology, Ocean Engineering, and other specialized fields related to ship propulsion systems, onboard machinery, marine energy systems, and advanced maritime technologies. These programmes are designed to meet international maritime standards while addressing the technological challenges of the modern shipping industry. The School's academic staff comprises distinguished professors, researchers, and experienced maritime engineers with extensive expertise in both academia and industry. Their combination of scientific knowledge and professional experience ensures that students receive a high-quality education founded on contemporary engineering practices, innovation, and applied research.     • Graduates of the School of Marine Engineering at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy are awarded a Bachelor's degree from an accredited higher education institution, together with the professional qualification and Certificate of Competency required to serve as a Third Engineer Officer in accordance with international maritime regulations and the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
    • After completing the required sea service and additional professional training, graduates may progress through the engineering officer ranks, advancing to the positions of Second Engineer Officer and ultimately Chief Engineer Officer, assuming increasing responsibilities in the operation, maintenance, and management of ship machinery and technical systems.
    • The Academy also provides graduates with the academic foundation required to pursue Master's and Doctoral (PhD) studies at universities in Bulgaria and abroad, in specialized fields related to maritime engineering, marine technology, energy systems, and other disciplines essential to the development of the shipping industry.
