Ilia State University was established in 2006 through the merger of six different academic institutions with long and varied histories. It is now one of Georgia's leading research and educational institutions. ISU is a multifunctional educational and research institution that offers a common space for academic and professional education and research through the collaborative efforts of its students, professors, teachers, and researchers. The union is founded on the principles of academic freedom, conscience freedom, and free choice. These principles are inextricably linked and interdependent: students, teachers, professors, and researchers have the freedom to select areas of study and research, as well as colleagues and supervisors with whom to collaborate. No one has the authority to prohibit them from conducting research on a particular topic or from publishing research findings for political or moral reasons. Students and professors are free to choose any form of transparent and accountable self-government they believe is best for the advancement of their union, the university, and its goals and objectives.
