Program Description

Our course combines practice and theory to offer you the most effective learning experience. With the support from your employer, you will be placed in your local AMHP duty team. You will study in university over two semesters, and you will also be able to work two to three days per week in your own team.

You will learn from a variety of professionals, ranging from expert practitioners and service users to law professional trainers and psychiatric staff. You will also be encouraged to visit services, such as Older People wards or Child and Adolescent Mental Health, to gain further experience in clinical practice. This course is also offered in Cambridge.

Other accepted qualifications:

  • A recognised pre-masters course.
  • Holders of the Metaptychion Spoudon Diploma (Master's degree) or higher qualifications will also be considered.

Alternative English language requirements:

  • Our preferred tests are IELTS, TOEFL iBT (with 88 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking) and Pearson PTE (with 61 overall and a minimum of 51 in all components), so we recommend you take one of these if possible. We also recognise the following qualifications/tests:
  1. Trinity College: Integrated Skills in English (ISE)
  2. LanguageCert International ESOL SELT tests
  3. International English Language Competency Assessment (IELCA)

Important Information:

  • This course is available to registered social workers, nurses (MH/LD), occupational therapists and chartered psychologists.
  • All practitioners must be registered in England with two years’ post-qualifying experience.
  • You’ll need to be in a position to be sponsored by your Local Authority.
  • If you don't meet our English language requirements, we offer a range of courses which could help you achieve the level required for entry. We also provide our own English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) in the UK and overseas.

Careers

  • Upon successfully completing this course, you will have met the ‘approval criteria’ (2013) of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • You'll be eligible to apply for AMHP registration through your Local Authority / Mental Health Trust in accordance with the Mental Health Regulations 2008, enhancing your employment opportunities with these sought-after skills.
