Privatisation of International Security

This module provides specialist study on the privatisation of International Security with a specific focus on the maritime domain. It offers students the opportunity to better understand the push-pull factors which led to the privatisation of security and highlight the allocation of security provision tasks to the private industry, which were hitherto perceived as a state obligation and monopoly.

The module will explore potential differences between land based and maritime companies, in terms of governance, their securitised space of action and typology of business tasks.

Complexity in Protective Security and Resilience

This module is designed to critically explore the complex issues impacting on protective security approaches in urban, maritime and aviation contexts. It is designed to critically analyse these complexities in the context of threats, governance (jurisdictional/governmental/organisations), geography (location/physicality of sites), and people (public/private) and the interconnections and dependencies that exist between all of these components.

The module utilises detailed case studies to stimulate thinking and discussion and seeks to do so in a manner that allows for interoperability in similar contexts internationally. The module then explores the different theoretical and applied approaches (physical, people, procedural, personal, ad cyber) that policy makers and practitioners can use to understand, counter and mitigate these complexities.

Environment, Conflict and Sustainability

This interdisciplinary module examines the complex interactions of natural resources, environment, conflict, development and peace on land and at sea. It looks at key theories and concepts in the area such as ‘resource curse,’ ‘extractivism,’ ‘environmental justice’ and ‘political ecology.’

It also encourages you to analyse specific conflicts and to identify challenges and opportunities for equitable natural resource governance towards sustainable peace and development. The module will provide you with an opportunity to use analytical tools from multiple perspectives including politics, sociology, political economy and geography to encourage critical reflection about contemporary debates on resource conflict, natural resource governance and environmental peacebuilding.
