Περιγραφή Προγράμματος

The aim of our Biomedical Genetics and Tissue Engineering MSc is to create qualified biomedical engineers who can help in the design, development, operation and research of complex medical devices for the modern biomedical and healthcare industry.

Gaining a deeper insight into genetics and tissue engineering, you will also cover biomechanics and biomaterials, and will learn about genomic technologies and molecular mechanisms.

You’ll be in demand in the area of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and the characterisation of tissue.

Teaching is delivered by enthusiastic world-leading biomedical research experts, and enhanced by clinical professionals who are part of our extensive network of industry and hospital collaborative partners. With our strong industry links, some projects are provided by hospital consultants and are based on solving practical biomedical problems and challenges.

Researchers at Brunel are working in a range of research areas, including tissue engineering, cell culture, microfluidics, and electrospinning techniques for developing novel materials. Their up-to-date knowledge will feed directly into your learning.

Περιεχόμενο Μαθημάτων

The taught modules are delivered over two terms. During the second term you’ll also work on your dissertation part-time. This will be followed by four months of full-time effort. Your dissertation project will involve an advanced piece of investigation and research relevant to biomedical engineering.

Artificial Organs

The purpose of this module is to give students an appreciation of the practice and knowledge required in the application of specific techniques in Biomedical Engineering including artificial organs and limbs.

Biomechanics and Biomaterials

This aim of this module is to give an introduction to the mechanics of the human body and the biomechanical and biomedical material requirements for surgical devices and implants. The basics of biocompatibility and the response of human tissue to implant materials will also be considered.

Biomedical Engineering Principles

This aim of this module is to provide an introduction to Biomedical Engineering Principals incorporating the foundations of mechanics, biomechanics and bio-fluid mechanics necessary for the practice of biomedical engineering, and the basics of structure and function in the human body, physiological processes and clinical response to disease or trauma.

Cell Signalling in Health and Disease

This module aims to provide an understanding of the principles and current advances in the signalling cascades that control cell proliferation and survival that are misregulated in a variety of human diseases.

Design and Manufacture

This module aims to provide students with experience of researching, assessing and reporting on the manufacturing, quality and design procedures including CAD (computer aided design) techniques in the biomedical engineering field.

Gene Regulation and Epigenetic

This module aims to give an up-to-date view of the regulation of gene expression, including how epigenetics, the histone code and the nuclear environment influence the control of gene expression beyond DNA-coded regulatory sequences

Innovation, Management and Research Methods

This module aims to give an introduction to the innovation processes required for the development, testing and release of new products, systems and devices into the commercial biomedical and clinical environment. It also aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to conduct research, analyse and interpret data, and to be familiar with management, ethical, risk and health and safety issues associated with conducting research in a clinical setting.

The dissertation aims for students to complete and report on a soundly executed and constructed programme of investigation, analysis and research containing original work.
